As someone working most of the day on its computer, and doing software development most of the time, it appeared to be a great investment to buy a large Apple iMac and have a nicer, more comfortable work environment. The 27-inch iMac made my life better in that regard! But a few months ago I moved in another country (Israel) and realized that it would be a nightmare to transport a large computer overseas.

The computer is too large for a small cabin luggage. And too large to fit into a standard check-in luggage. In addition, even if I were to do check-in the luggage, it could be damaged, lost or stolen and without any insurance protecting this precious gem. I searched online for a solution, and none seemed great, and few people seemed to have done it. Some people even advised to sell the computer and buy a new one in the country of destination. So now that I've done it, I've decided to share my experience.

First option was to buy a hard case, kind of like the one used by musicians or sound engineers to transport their things. A popular brand for that was Pelican Cases, but after looking it up, and some other options on Amazon, it seemed super expensive (like $650+), especially if I didn't plan to move around every month and just needed it for one-time use.

Second option was to use an international transporter like UPS, Fedex or DHL. I called all of them in France, but the prices were very high (in the 400-600 euros range). Also the logistics seemed complex.

Third option was to sell the computer in France and avoid all the headache. I posted the listing online. But it was heartbreaking! A computer like this that's worth 2300€ new would sell for something like 1600€.

FINALLY I found a good solution. Asked the airline company if it was possible to buy an extra seat and bring the computer with me on the plane. Gave them the dimensions. It worked!! Had to do it over the phone so they could book two seats side to side, next to the window. Apparently they do that regularly for other kinds of objects such as valuable music instruments.

It might be super expensive if you're going from say- France to Australia. But with the low cost airline I did that with (Transavia), on this flight, a one way ticket is usually in the $100-$200 range. Seemed reasonable and much more interesting financially than the first 3 options. Also super safe since the computer was always with me, in its original Apple Box.

Hope this can help someone who is in a similar situation!
